Swine - EnMax™ for Sows
EnMax™ Boosts Sow Intakes and Performance
Sows are the physical engines of the swine industry. Like any engine, if sows don’t receive enough fuel they won’t operate at peak efficiency. Every producer has seen a sow go off its feed and head down hill fast while attempting to support a litter. Most of the time management practices weren’t enough to prevent a drop in performance due to low intakes—until now. Ralco Nutrition introduces EnMax™ for sows, a feed program which maintains excellent feed intakes in all environmental conditions.
“It isn’t necessary for sows to lose large amounts of weight during lactation and in fact some sows can even gain weight. The EnMax™ feed program for sows limits weight loss and promotes potential weight gain when sows are trying to provide nutrients for milk production. Next to water, energy is the greatest need of the sow to successfully make milk and still meet the needs for reproduction when the sow is weaned,” said Dr. Mark Wilson, of the Ralco swine technical group.
The same sensational results EnMax™ has provided in grow/finisher barns are now being seen in the farrowing barn. Precision technology developed using net energy formulation, crystalline amino acids and supplemental enzymes optimizes formulation of sows diets to provide a diet with lower heat increment (creates less body heat) and allows her to maximize feed consumption and energy utilization of the ration. Reducing heat increment is very important in helping summer rations maintain adequate intakes. All this equates into more milk for piglets, reduced weight loss in the sow, reduced protein loss from muscle, and improved reproduction for the sow after weaning.
When crystalline amino acids are used, more crude protein can be replaced (removing bean meal) by corn that has a higher energy efficiency and utilization. EnMax™ uses 100-150 fewer pounds of soybean meal per ton compared to some conventional diets in the field. When input costs are high, maximizing the available energy of ingredients is more important than ever. Fat prices are quite high; with the EnMax™ program you can reach the necessary energy with significantly less added fat than most programs.
“Most every time the EnMax™ for sow program will save producers money,” Wilson said. “Even if the sow performance remains the same, you will benefit on a cost basis. So far we have seen this program save producers money because it uses less soybean meal and the sows are outperforming sows on other diets.”
Because net energy formulation places a higher value on ingredients with a lower heat increment sows stay on feed and keep milking when the weather turns hot. Crystalline amino acids require less energy to be absorbed and utilized than amino acids being freed through digestion of a crude protein which creates more heat loss thus the crystalline diet makes for a “cooler diet.” Increasing body heat or environmental temperatures affect sow intake negatively. Feeding a diet that reduces internal body heat, helps keep lactating sows performing in even the toughest of conditions.
